COD verification before dispatch — what works for Indian D2C

Why Indian D2C brands verify COD orders before shipping, and how AI voice plus WhatsApp confirmation compares to SMS-only or manual calling.

Cash-on-delivery is still the default for much of Indian ecommerce. It also creates a verification gap: the order exists in Shopify, but you do not know if the customer still wants it until the courier knocks — or until the parcel comes back as RTO.

COD verification before dispatch closes that gap.

What COD verification means

Before you hand the order to your 3PL, you confirm:

  • The customer placed the order intentionally
  • The delivery address is correct
  • The customer is available to receive the parcel

That is different from a marketing WhatsApp blast. It is a confirmation step tied to a specific order about to ship.

Why SMS and WhatsApp alone fall short

Messages can be ignored, buried in promotions, or read hours later. By then the order may already be in the manifest.

Recover Agent uses AI voice for the real-time conversation, then WhatsApp for confirmation links, payment options, and follow-up — the same voice + WhatsApp pattern described on why calling.

What a good confirmation call covers

A useful COD confirmation is short and transactional:

  1. Greet the customer in their language
  2. Reference the order and amount
  3. Confirm address and availability
  4. Capture intent — confirm, reschedule, or cancel before shipping

What happens when the customer confirms

Outcomes should write back to your store — tags, hold flags, or cancellation — so ops does not maintain a parallel sheet. Recover Agent's control room tracks verified, not verified, and intervention-required orders in one view: control room.

COD to prepaid on the same call

Some customers will pay online if you offer a clear reason on the call — shipping savings, faster dispatch, or a simpler receipt. WhatsApp can deliver the payment link immediately after the conversation. See the prepaid step in how it works.

Compliance and customer experience

Recover Agent runs WhatsApp through the official WhatsApp Business API with pre-approved templates — not unofficial gateways that risk number bans. Confirmation calls are once per order, with address verification, not a sales pitch. More in the FAQ.

When verification is worth it

If COD is a meaningful share of orders and RTO is eating margin, pre-dispatch confirmation is usually the first lever to pull. If you are under ~500 orders/month or already fully prepaid, the economics may not clear — the site is upfront about that on the demo form.
